Bio Scout

Bio Scout, originally uploaded by codymc.

This was the second (i believe) time I’ve filled up (and actually I only filled it up to about half) since getting back on August 11th. Granted — I’ve filled the Benz up once too — but I’ve only driven it like 4x (and 2 of those was a trip to and back from the mechanic to get the wheel bearings replaced).

MARTA has saved me a ton — and I’ve been getting excercise (although not this week) by walking there.

As you may know, Atlanta experienced a bit of a gas shortage recently — however diesel was still in plentiful supply — and Refuel (conveniently the closest diesel station to my house) didn’t seem to have a problem providing bio either. It’s got me thinking about how much I drive — and the way I drive.

Driving less aggressively can improve your gas mileage — some claim up to 30%! What does that mean? Basically — don’t stomp the peddle when the light turns green — slow easy acceleration is your friend. The same applies when approaching a red light — don’t stomp the break at the last minute — just let off the gas and let gravity and friction take on some of that work load.

Also your car gets awful mileage while sitting at stop lights (0 MPG!!) so if you are familiar with your route try to pace yourself to the lights (not always easy in the ATL!). Keeping to the posted speed limit should, in theory, help you do this (assuming the lights are timed this way and not to some other traffic calming purpose). Your main goal should be a constant speed — as anytime you accelerate you’re hurting your average MPG. Decelerating unnecessarily means you’ll be using that peddle more later as well. Coasting down hills can help as well (as long as you don’t let your car slow down to the point where you have to stomp the gass to regain momentum.)

Some Hypermilers take this to extremes (and some of their practices — like coasting in nuetral behind big rigs — seem down right dangerous) but they have some general tips that could help you max out your MPG.

…steps down off soap box…

I just put some new pix up on Flickr from day 2 of the Candler Park fest. Lots of kitten pix — and we noticed they were serving beer in compostable cups!

This is the window project I finished (well it’s almost finished — it needs some hanging hardware added) for the Candler Park festival.

Speaking of which — the Candler Park Festival IS THIS WEEKEND! Hopefully I’ll see some of you there.

On the way to MARTA

Lots of shoes, originally uploaded by codymc.

I’ve been carrying my camera with me — looking for interesting things to photograph. Here are some of the things, I’ve found.

I’m still fascinated by these shoes — but haven’t quite caught them in the right light yet.

Nearby is also this interesting stencil of roaches on a sidewalk.
